FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO DO WORD PROBLEMS

 

1. Read the problem
2. Draw a picture of the problem to help you understand
3. Write out the equation as a story flow map ( 3 spaces) to show equation
4. Decide what operation to use ( add, subtract, multiply, decide )

 

PAGE 60 EXAMPLE:

Example: Maise has 6 times as many lollipops such as Jamie. If Jamie has 8 lollipops, how many lollipops that Maise have?

The number for the model is " 8 " because Jamie has 8 lollipops

 

Maise has 6 times more than Jamie has.

So 6 x 8 =48

 

Answer: Maise has 48 lollipops.

 

PAGE 61 EXAMPLE:

 

Example: A red sweater costs $36.00. Red mittens cost $9.00. The sweater costs how many times more than the mittens?

THE LARGER NUMBER ( $ 36) in the problem goes in the PRODUCT.

 

( $ 9 ) is the KNOWN PRODUCT

 

So : 9 x ______ = 36

 

Well, 9 x 4 = 36 so the sweater costs 4 times more than the red mittens
