PAGE 60 EXAMPLE:

Example: Maise has 6 times as many lollipops such as Jamie. If Jamie has 8 lollipops, how many lollipops that Maise have?

The number for the model is " 8 " because Jamie has 8 lollipops

 

Maise has 6 times more than Jamie has.

So 6 x 8 =48

 

Answer: Maise has 48 lollipops.

 

PAGE 61 EXAMPLE:

 

Example: A red sweater costs $36.00. Red mittens cost $9.00. The sweater costs how many times more than the mittens?

Go to this video to learn how to do a DIY Animal Planter in celebration of Earth Day!

 

 

You can google " DIY Animal Planters" for other images and ideas!

 

Some common things you can plant indoors, and in small containers:

 

- common herbs (basils, mint, cilantros, chives, thyme)
- common fruits & vegetables (kale, green onions, beets, radishes, cherry tomatoes, spinach, chilis, strawberries, blueberries, kumquats)
- flowers or decorative plants (marigolds, petunias, forget-me-nots, baby breaths, jasmine, aloe vera).

 

This assignment is OPTIONAL. Although I hope that you will do it with your parents, spending some time being creative and planting something together. Maybe mom/dad make one and you make another other.

 

You can use any materials you might have at home - craft paper, acrylic paint, washi-tape, colorful duct tape, perhaps newspaper/fabric with paper mache or mod podge paste (liquid starch+flour or Elmer’s glue+water works too).

 

You don’t have to use a plastic bottle if you have a different container material that you think may work well. You can also make a mini one using a water bottle.

Submit anytime between now and next week.

When you compare decimals, you can STACK the decimals by lining them up.

 

You can also use a NUMBER LINE ( See page 251)

 

Look at the LINK for help on how the number line is divided ( TENTHS and HUNDEREDTHS)

 

To compare the two numbers, Find the two numbers on the number line.

 

Then you can see which one is greater, less, or equal.

Quotation Marks Practice:

 

You use quotation marks to indicate direct speech or what someone is saying.

Please notice the commas in the sentences as well.

 

Example:

PLACE VALUE CHART:

 

A tenth = 1 whole cut into 10 equal parts. 1/10= .10 ( Like a DIME, Ten cents!)
A hundredth= 1 whole cut into 100 equal parts. 1/100= .01 ( Like a PENNY, One cent!)
A Thousandth= 1 whole cut into 1000 equal parts 1/1000= .001 ( Really small )

Problem Solving with Fractions / Multiplying Whole Number with a Fraction:

 

Advice for page 241-242:

 

Remember when you are multiplying a whole number and a fraction, make sure you first put a "1" under the whole number. Then you can just multiply the numerators across and then the denominator.

 

Example:

2 x 2/3 =

Put a "1' under the 2 so it is 2/1....Remember 2/1=2 so thats why it works

Then 2/1 x 2/3 = 4/3

4/3 = 1 1/3

Look at the numerator, you can not subtract ( 3 minus 4 )
So you have to take 1 whole ( 5/5) from the 7 and add to 3/5
Now you have 6 8/5 because 8/5 is ( 5/5 + 3/5)
Subtract 2 4/5
Answer: 4 4/5

Remember when the numerator ( top number) is greater than the denominator ( bottom number) , that means you have more than a whole. So you need to take the whole out...You can also DIVIDE to take the whole out.
